It is difficult to know what one expects at a site the moment you hear the concept that such a memorial site exists. I should say I maintained a guarded opinion of what an African Burial Ground might mean, as I learned it had been a project of the City municipality. Before arriving at this memorial site, I chastised myself for my skeptical attitude and did my best to empty my mind of prejudices against such a memorial built by the descendants of the very hierarchical patriarchy that had subjected the people of Africa to such base and demeaning existence.
